Your route to practicing as a solicitor or barrister

Starting with a Qualifying Law Degree

i-LLB Qualifying Law Degree > Legal Practice Course (LPC) > Trainee Solicitor Training

Starting with a non-Qualifying Law Degree

Bachelor's degree in any subject > Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) > Legal Practice Course (LPC) >Trainee Solicitor Training

Our law degree is an excellent starting point for a whole range of careers. The legal industry offers a huge amount of diversity; from solicitor and barrister to judge or paralegal. Outside of the legal industry, a law degree can lead to careers in journalism, politics, HR, finance and many more. As over 90% of our tutors are qualified lawyers you will learn how to apply the law in practice and develop the transferable skills demanded by employers. Whether you’re considering a career in law or the wider commercial world, our LLB is a great place to start your journey.

You will study 11 units per module via e-learning and do self-study using online resources. Throughout each unit, you will be able to check your knowledge, understanding, and progress by attempting a number of tasks upon which you will get immediate feedback. Tasks will also be set whereby you analyze, discuss and resolve issues and present them orally and in writing. 8 of these tasks per module and a mock assessment will be submitted and you will receive individual feedback from a professional tutor. There will also be 2 sessions per module where all students can interact online with each other and a tutor who will answer questions and provide consolidation, study skills, and revision guidance.

You will have access to all study material online including module and unit guides, student handbook and assessment information. Online there will be a range of resources including relevant media (e.g. presentations, video clips, demonstrations and webinars), test and feedback exercises, as well as access to a wide range of databases where you can find all relevant case law, statutes and e-books.

  • For the part-time 6 year program, please allow 10-15 hours of study per week
  • 3-year course - the course starts in September with a one-week induction which is conducted online. There are two semesters per academic year - each semester is 15 weeks long, with 12 weeks tuition, one-week consolidation/revision and two weeks to complete assessments. You will study three modules per semester.
  • 4-year course - the course starts in September with a one-week induction which is conducted online. There are two semesters per academic year - each semester is 15 weeks long, with 12 weeks tuition, one-week consolidation/revision and two weeks to complete the assessments. You will study two modules per semester. You will also have to study one module over the summer, between Year 3 and 4 and during the summer at the end of Year 4. This module will be studied over six weeks with a one-week consolidation and one week for assessment.
  • 4.5-year course - the course starts in January with an induction week, which is conducted online. The first academic year covers twenty calendar months, January to August of the following year, with 15 months of study over four semesters. During this period one module is studied at a time, sequentially.  In the following academic years, you will study two modules per semester.  In Years 2, 3 and 4, there are two main semesters per academic year. Each semester is 15 weeks long, with 12 weeks of tuition, one week consolidation/revision and two weeks to complete the assessments. Students will study one module over the summer between Years 3 and 4 and during the summer at the end of Year 4.  This module will be studied over six weeks with a one-week consolidation and one week for assessment. Each year is made up of two semesters consisting of 12 teaching weeks and one-week consolidation/revision and two weeks to complete assessments. You will study a total of 18 modules over the four years of the course.
  • 6-year course - the course starts in September with a one-week induction which is conducted online. There are two semesters per academic year - each semester is 15 weeks long, with 12 weeks tuition, one-week consolidation/revision and two weeks to complete the assessments. You will study one full subject per semester, and one subject split over both semesters that is then assessed at the end of Semester 2.

Assessment

Assessments are spread out throughout the duration of the course, rather than having lots of exams at the end of the year.  This means at the end of each semester, you have a revision/consolidation week followed by two weeks for assessment in each module.

Method of assessment

Throughout the course, you are assessed by a variety of different assessment methods to enable you to demonstrate the development of your knowledge and skills throughout the program. The methods of assessment include:

  • Examinations – two hours, ten multiple-choice questions and a choice of two from six long-form questions.
  • Coursework – essay, project report or portfolio.
  • Oral presentation.

The range of assessment methods reflects the practical nature of the program and aligns the assessment with the learning outcomes of the program. A mock assessment is included.

Your degree classification

You must pass each module to be awarded your LLB (Hons) Law Degree. The pass mark for each subject is 40%. In calculating the overall average, for purposes of deciding the degree classification, the assessments are weighted as below.

English language requirements

The University is required to see evidence of English language ability before issuing a CAS reference number to students from non-majority English speaking countries.

There are two options that students can satisfy the English Language requirements:

English Language Qualifications

Students who have an academic qualification equivalent to a UK degree which was taught in a ‘majority English speaking’ country do not need to obtain a separate English language qualification. However, in some circumstances, the University of Law may request evidence of your English proficiency either before you start a program or during the program of study.

For details of countries counted as ‘majority English speaking’ by the Home Office, please see below.

Pre-Sessional English Language Programme

We are now offering a seven or twelve-week pre-sessional English course to students who need to improve their English skills in order to meet the IELTS requirements for entry onto our undergraduate LLB courses. To find out more, please see below.

Accepted English language qualifications

If you are from a non-majority English speaking country and do not have an academic qualification equivalent to a UK degree taught in a ‘majority English speaking’ country, you will need to send us:

• a certified copy of an approved English Language Test at (or above) the specific level outlined in the table below, in each of the four components of language learning

Please see the table below for details of the English language qualifications we accept for your chosen course.

Undergraduate Funding Options

There are two main costs you need to consider when applying to study at university; tuition fees and exam costs. We would highly recommend that you explore all your funding options before you start your course to ensure you have the funds to cover these costs.

All the undergraduate courses running during the 2020 academic year, have been designated to receive student support apart from the January start 4.5 year LLB, the Senior Status LLB and the 1 year International Foundation Year courses as these do not meet the undergraduate funding criteria.
