Aims

  • To introduce students to the concepts and principles of complex care delivery in the long term and palliative care for all service users.
  • To explore the role and responsibility of the nurse in the management of long term and palliative care conditions, acknowledging the importance of fairness and equity.

Learning Outcomes

  • (LO1) Discuss the factors that underpin assessment, planning, and evaluation of effective clinical and psychosocial nursing care;
  • (LO2) Demonstrate a critical awareness of the difference between long term, palliative and end of life care in nursing practice;
  • (LO3) Systematically assess the holistic care of patients with long term, palliative and end of life conditions to meet the full range of essential physical and mental health needs;
  • (LO4) Use a range of therapeutic and communication skills in an individualized, compassionate approach to care, maintaining dignity at all times;
  • (LO5) Work in partnership with service users, carers and families, empowering and providing choice wherever possible;
  • (LO6) Discuss the role of the multidisciplinary team in the provision of high-quality care;
