Aims

  • To develop the student's knowledge of the legal, ethical and therapeutic dimensions of nursing
  • To develop the student's understanding of the care needs of service users through an engagement with the theoretical and professional basis of nursing care
  • To enable students to understand the therapeutic value of a nursing relationship and its contribution to the provision of compassionate,non-discriminatory and dignified care

Learning Outcomes

  • (LO1) discuss the contribution of nursing in the provision of contemporary healthcare to a diverse population;
  • (LO2) recognize the nurse-patient relationship as a core therapeutic element of nursing;
  • (LO3)  identify the role of the nurse in safeguarding vulnerable persons;
  • (LO4) identify the professional, legal and ethical frameworks that underpin the professional dimensions of nursing;
  • (LO5) demonstrate knowledge of interpersonal and communication skills to effectively engage, maintain and disengage from professional relationships.
